The Challenge of Intelligent Water Management

Water utilities worldwide face a common set of challenges: aging infrastructure, rising energy costs, water scarcity, and the pressure to deliver reliable service with shrinking budgets. On average, 25–40% of treated water is lost to leaks before reaching consumers. Manual monitoring leaves utilities reacting to failures rather than preventing them. The transition to intelligent water management — powered by IoT, real-time data, and automated decision support — is the answer.

What Makes Water Management “Intelligent”?

  • Real-time data from hundreds or thousands of monitoring points across the distribution network
  • Automatic anomaly detection that flags leaks, pressure drops, or unusual consumption within minutes
  • Data-driven decisions replacing manual inspections and reactive workflows
  • Remote control of valves, pumps, and PRVs (pressure reducing valves)
  • Integration with GIS, SCADA, billing systems, and reporting tools
  • Predictive analytics that anticipate failures before they cause disruption

ThingsLog Intelligent Water — Technology Stack

Low-Power IoT Data Loggers

ThingsLog manufactures its own CE-certified, IP68-rated data loggers that connect to pressure transducers, flow meters, water quality sensors, and smart meters. They operate on battery for 10+ years and transmit data wirelessly using LoRa, NB-IoT, or 4G.

Multi-Technology Connectivity

LoRaWAN is ideal for dense AMR deployments (thousands of meters in a city); NB-IoT provides nationwide coverage without gateway infrastructure; 4G enables real-time data for critical monitoring points like pump stations and PRVs.

ThingsLog Cloud Platform

Collects, stores, and analyzes all meter and sensor data. Provides dashboards tailored to water utility operations: DMA balance views, consumption graphs, alarm logs, pressure profiles, and compliance reports.

NRW Reduction with ThingsLog Intelligent Water

Non-Revenue Water (NRW) represents water that utilities produce, treat, and pump but never bill to customers. For a medium-sized utility supplying 10 million m³/year, a 30% NRW level means 3 million m³ of treated water is lost — representing enormous energy, chemical treatment, and water resource costs. ThingsLog addresses this through: district metered area (DMA) monitoring with flow balancing; minimum night flow analysis to identify background leakage; pressure zone management to reduce pipe stress and burst frequency; AI-powered anomaly detection to localize leaks within specific network segments.

Deployment Flexibility for Water Utilities of All Sizes

ThingsLog intelligent water solutions are designed to scale from a small municipality with a few hundred meters to a large utility managing hundreds of thousands of endpoints. Deployment can start with a pilot DMA and expand in phases, reusing the same platform and devices. The solution supports mixed connectivity environments, meaning LoRa, NB-IoT, and 4G devices can coexist on the same platform and dashboard.

Platform Security and Data Ownership

All data collected by ThingsLog IoT devices is transmitted over encrypted connections (TLS) and stored in the ThingsLog cloud platform hosted in the EU. Utilities retain full ownership of their operational data. Role-based access control allows different permission levels for operators, managers, and external auditors. For utilities with strict data sovereignty requirements, ThingsLog supports on-premise or private cloud deployment. The platform is accessible via browser and mobile app, providing field teams with real-time alerts and data access from any location.

Get Started with ThingsLog Intelligent Water

Whether you need to start with smart metering or go straight to full NRW monitoring with pumping station control, ThingsLog can configure the right combination of devices and platform modules. A typical pilot covers a single district metered area — enough to demonstrate measurable water balance improvement and build the operational data needed to justify a full network rollout. Contact us to arrange a pilot assessment and receive a tailored proposal based on your network characteristics and current NRW levels.
